In 1948 Akbank was founded in the month of January. This was originally founded to provide financing for the cotton producers in the region. The first branch of Akbank in Istanbul was opened in the Sirkeci district on July 14, 1950. It was in 1954 that the bank relocated its headquarters to Istanbul. The overseas activities of Akbank have been taken care through its two subsidiaries in Germany (Akbank A.G.) and the Netherlands (Akbank N.V.) and a branch in Malta. Seeking to increase investments in Turkey, Citigroup has selected Akbank as a long-term strategic partner attributable to Akbank’s successful performance and strong market position. The capital adequacy ratio of the Bank is one of the highest in the sector with 20.7%.

Ak Pension Fund of Akbank was established in 2003. In February 2006 it was sold to the Aksigorta insurance company. In addition to the core banking activities of Akbank there are also a wide range of retail, commercial, corporate, private banking and international trade finance services. The subsidiaries of Akbank provide non-banking financial, capital market and investment services. The overseas activities of Akbank have been taken care through its two subsidiaries in Germany (Akbank A.G.) and the Netherlands (Akbank N.V.) and a branch in Malta. Citigroup’s strategic partnership in Akbank was successfully concluded on January 9, 2007. The strategic partnership with Citigroup has opened a new era for the growth and expansion of Akbank. In 2006, Akbank had continued to obtain loan facilities from overseas markets at favorable term. About 31.6% of Akbank shares are publicly traded and listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE).
