National Australia Bank in Australia was formed in the year 1981 after the merger between the national Bank Limited and the Commercial banking company of Sydney. The national bank limited was formed when in the year 1858 Alexander Gibb and Andrew Cruickshank established the national bank of Australasia which had its headquarters in Melbourne. The bank opened many branches in different parts of Australia like Tasmania, New South Wales and Queensland. The bank had a branch in Mauritius and in London. During the banking crisis of 1893 the National bank of Australia had to be closed and later the bank emerged as a public limited company in the same year.
On the other hand the commercial banking companies of Sydney was established in th year 1834 and the bank Thomas barker who was a manufacturer, engineer, politician, Land owner and philanthropist as the director and chairman.
These two banks merged in the year 1981 to form National Australia Bank which enjoyed all the benefits of the merger. National Australia Bank had a large financial base and eyed on offshore expansion. The National Australia Bank opened its branches in Beijing, Chicago, Dallas, Seoul, San Fransisco, Athens, Atlanta, Frankfurt, Bangkok, Taipei and new Delhi
National Australia Bank purchased Clydesdale bank or Scotland and the Northern bank of Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland from the Midland Bank. It has also undergone several other acquisitions.
